So, with everyone doing their own little corner of the Yugioh verse, I decided to tackle a rather debated subject amongst Yugioh fans and anime fans in general: The English Dub, and the Japanese Sub. For this mini series, I'll be going backwards and comparing the two versions side by side, voice acting wise, and trying to deliver my verdict. So for this first episode, we'll be taking a look at the newest (ish) series: Arc-V!
Compared to the previous series, Zexal, Arc-V is really, really good. The story is mind boggling, the plot is great, a lot of the characters are really loveable.. but they've got some noticeable differences in the voice acting category. Let's look at the dub first.
The dub of Arc-V is.. yikes. A lot of the Standard Dimension folks sound awful, especially Yuya and Gongenzaka. I know Yuya is supposed to be Egao and stuff, but come on.. he sounds like he's whining half of his dialogue. The confrontation between Yuya and Reiji before they went dimension hopping made me cringe rather than watch in excitement.
As for other characters:
-Yuzu/Zuzu sounds alright for the most part. I'm pretty neutral with her, in terms of VA. Fun fact: Yuzu is brought to you by the same voice actress who voiced Dawn in Pokemon, Emily Bauer.
-Reiji/Declan also sounds pretty good. Voiced by the same guy who voiced Vector in the English Zexal dub, he sounds great in comparison to some of his other fellow characters.
-Shingo/Sylvio: I actually like his dub voice better than his sub voice. (*Pitchforks down.*) To me, the English Dub voice actually nails the flamboyant nature Shingo has, and it sounds great. Easily the best English Dub voice.
-Yugo, Yuri, and Yuto: Ehm.. Yugo sounds too deep voiced, Yuto is eh, and Yuri is the best out of the four. I know the same guy voices all 4, but... they're still not great.
I would do all of the characters, but for sake of time, I'm providing notable character examples.
The tone. Again, going back to Yuya.. it sounds like whining half the time, with the only redemption (if you even count it as one) is Yuya in Berserk Mode, which sounds.. okay. Some characters can portray their emotions and pain rather well, such as Shay Obsidian during the Obelisk Force duel when he gets a chance to exact revenge, and Sora being crazy, played rather nicely by the VA who brought you the voices of Leo and Luna, Sherry LeBlanc, Yubel and Tori Meadows.
The dub conveys humor decently as well, with the return of the original VAs for Jack and Crow, and the interactions between Crow and Shingo are pretty funny.

The best part about the dub of Arc-V? The references!! My absolute favorite, is the elevator music in the Synchro Dimension is Hyperdrive, the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5ds theme song. It also contains some other cool nods such as the final tier class for the Synchro course contains the 'Fudo Theory and Summoning', another nod to 5ds.
And before we move to the sub, here are the pros and cons of the dub.
:arrow_backward: Pros :arrow_forward:
-Refrences
-Shingo
-Original VA's
-Shay and Sora's portrayal of emotions
-Okay Beserk Mode Yuya
-Yuri
-Some Humor
:small_orange_diamond: Cons :small_blue_diamond:
-Yuya sounds awful.
-So does Gongenzaka.
-Yugo
-Yuto
-Yuya sounds like he's whining.
-Tone is okay at best
-Overall really weak..
Now to the sub!
Ah.. this is much better. The voice actors sound great, the tone and emotions are skillfully conveyed, it doesn't sound like they're whining.
The voice actors actually sound like they're the ones traumatized, in pain, or in a high stakes duel, and seemed to jump into their characters shoes, which is great for depth and storytelling.
Unlike the dub, Yuya is voiced by multiple people in the sub. Yuya and Yuri share a VA, and twins play Yuto and Yugo, and it works. They each have their own personalities fleshed out, and it seems so much smoother.
Now, for pros and cons.
:arrow_backward: Pros :arrow_forward:
-Yuya isn't whining.
-They all sound great.
-They convey emotions extremely well, actually sounding like they're in pain.
-Tone isn't all over the place
-Berserk Mode Yuya sounds menacing, not just okay.
-Names are better
:small_orange_diamond: Cons :small_blue_diamond:
-Shingo
-Sometimes even the sub can falter, plot wise.
-Some characters become static.
:small_red_triangle: The Verdict :small_red_triangle_down:
Overall, with the weak dub, whining tone, and the great emotion conveying of the sub: the sub definitely wins here. While the refrences may be great, it doesn't make for great storytelling or depth.
So! Next time on Dub Vs. Sub: Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. Comment down below with your thoughts, and see you next time.
